Chapter 12

Vanessa paced the small kitchen. She picked up the phone and then tossed it aside. She paced some more. I wonder why he hasn’t called me. She stared at the phone on the counter.

She reached for the phone and, at the same time, was startled by a small rap on the front door. She hadn’t heard any vehicles pull up.

She crossed over to the front door pulling it open, and there stood Jason.

She peered around him. “Where’s your car?” She opened the door wider for him to enter.

“At the bottom of the hill.” He stepped inside.

She knitted her brows together when she looked him over. He was wearing the same clothes from the night before.

“What happened to you?” She studied his five o’clock shadow from a missed day of shaving.

“When I tore out of here last night, I got a flat tire. I slept in my car.”

Vanessa reached for his arm and gently caressed it. “Oh, Jason, that’s terrible. You must have been so cold. Why didn’t you walk back up to the house?”

“I was mad. More like sulking. So I just slept in my car. Thankfully, I had an old wool army blanket in the trunk. I started up the car every now and then to keep the chill away. Now I’m out of gas,” he hung his head and gazed at the floor.

Vanessa laughed out loud. “You’re a mess. All of this because of our argument last night.” She circled her arms around him and hugged him. “I’m sorry for my words. I love you, and I do want to marry you. I’ve been worrying all night about you. I was trying to get up the nerve to call you when you knocked.”

“If I could bother you for a cup of coffee and some breakfast, I’ll borrow some gas from the barn and get my tire changed and be out of your hair.”

“You’ll do no such thing.”

He pushed his head back and looked at her through half-closed lids. “You won’t let me borrow some gas?”

“Of course you can. But I don’t want you out of my hair. We have a wedding to plan.” She looked up at him and smiled.

He cocked his head and pulled his bottom lip in tightly. “Seriously?”

“I’d never joke about marrying the man of my dreams. The one in a million, best catch on this earth.” She leaned forward and kissed his lips. She liked the feel of his scratchy face as she cupped it. pulling him closer.

He motioned to his mouth and face. “Teeth. Shower. Been sleeping in my car overnight.” A sheepish grin crossed his mouth.

“Why don’t you take a shower while I fix breakfast? I have an extra toothbrush underneath the sink, and there’s an extra razor in the cabinet. Though, I have to tell you, I’m really digging the scruffy look.” She winked.

He brushed his hand across his chin. “Well then, if I get points for being scruffy, I won’t need that razor.” He walked down the hall toward the bathroom, stopping once to look over his shoulder at Vanessa.
